Eirik Horneland: "We fought until the very end!"
After his Verts’ setback at the Parc (2-1), the Saint-Étienne coach appeared at the press conference with his head held high, still satisfied with the performance shown against Paris's formidable lineup.
A Challenging First Half
It was a tough match against a very strong team. In the opening minutes, we could have been more assertive in key areas. After that, we lost control of the game. Paris took charge, utilizing their wings effectively, which hurt us. We struggled to regain possession. Being 2-0 down at halftime, the players naturally returned to the locker room with less confidence. We had to make both tactical and mental adjustments. Afterward, we managed to regain control. We fought hard to create opportunities and keep believing.
Reasons to Believe!
Zuriko Davitashvili’s goal was a great source of hope, and it allowed us to stay in the game until the very end. We might even have hoped for an equalizer, though Paris was undoubtedly the better side. We fought until the last moment! We lacked a bit of quality to secure that second goal. We could have been sharper with the final pass and applied more pressure to Paris’s ball recovery. We had three, four, even five good opportunities, but something was missing. But all of this took a tremendous amount of energy as well!
What’s Next?
We approached this match with the intention of developing our game plan. Step by step, we aim to improve and, one day, match the quality of Ligue 1’s top teams. Tonight, I didn’t learn anything new about the quality of this league—Paris is undoubtedly an excellent team. We fought hard, and the match remained competitive until the very last second. I’m pleased with that.
