Les Vertes held back by Le Havre

Faced with Le Havre, their rivals in the race to stay in the top division, Les Stéphanoises fell to a 1-2 defeat at the Salif Keita. Despite having the opportunity to secure their lead, it was Les Ciel et Marine who reduced the gap to just one point.

Les Vertes played host to Le Havre at the Stade Salif-Keita on Saturday. Marc-Antoine Brihat's side struggled to find their rhythm in the opening 15 minutes, but it was the visitors who set the pace. Les Vertes went on the offensive in the 20th minute when Amandine Pierre-Louis had a chance to fire home from a cross in the box, but her shot was blocked by the Ciel et Marine defence. On the Loire side, Maryne Gignoux once again put her side in the driving seat. Les Vertes conceded the opening goal, however, when Maryne Gignoux gave away an indirect free-kick, which Laurie Cance, who had already scored a hat-trick in the first leg, finished off (ASSE 0-1 Havre, 27th). At the end of the first half, Sarah Cambot had the only real chance for St Etienne when Sarah Stratigakis did well to keep her out, but her shot went wide.

The second half did not start any better for Les Vertes. Le Havre kept control and prevented Solène Champagnac's team-mates from going forward. On the hour mark, the changes began with the departure of Amandine Pierre-Louis, who gave way to Adèle Connesson. Le Havre also made a few adjustments and were determined not to stop there. In a 3-on-1 duel, Maryne Gygnoux beat Effa Effa to turn the ball away for a corner. A corner that benefited Le Havre who, in total confusion, saw Roth get hold of the ball and make the breakthrough (ASSE 0-2 Le Havre, 72nd). Marc-Antoine Brihat made several changes. As the game drew to a close, the Le Havre defence fumbled a corner. Adèle Connesson reduced the deficit from the penalty spot (ASSE 1-2 Havre, 82nd).

Not the start we had hoped for in a busy month of March, with five fixtures including four league games and a Coupe de France semi-final. If they miss out on the first of these, they will have to turn up the heat next Saturday when they take on Paris Saint-Germain and dream of a French Cup final.
