Maxime Bernauer joins Les Verts

On Sunday, AS Saint-Étienne and Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia) reached an agreement to sign defender Maxime Bernauer (26) on loan with an option to buy, until the end of the season.

A native of Hennebont in the Morbihan region, Maxime Bernauer began his career in his home town, playing for Garde du Vœu Hennebont. Gifted with qualities that quickly made him stand out from the crowd, young Maxime went on to play for FC Lorient, US Montagnarde and the Pôle Espoirs de Ploufagran before joining one of France's most prestigious training centers: Stade Rennais, which he joined in 2013.

A member of a soccer family, Maxime Bernauer made his mark at SRFC. For seven years, the Breton passed through the stages of Rennes training alongside big names like Ousmane Dembélé and Eduardo Camavinga. On May 7, 2018, at the age of 19, he made his first appearance in the Rennes squad for a Ligue 1 match, just a few days before initialing his first professional contract with his training club.

On loan from Stade Rennais to US Concarneau in the French National in 2019, Maxime Bernauer was then transferred to another N1 club, Le Mans, with whom he took part in 34 matches. His performances then opened the doors to Ligue 2 BKT and Paris FC. 71 matches later, Maxime Bernauer had made a name for himself in the capital and a reputation as a reliable, all-round player, capable of playing in the central axis, on the right flank or in a defensive midfield position.

In 2023, Maxime Bernauer's career took on a new dimension abroad. Transferred to Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia), the defender had the opportunity to play 43 top-level matches, in the league of course, where he was crowned champion last summer, but also at European level, including the Champions League. The 26-year-old started every game, including those against Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund and Celtic Glasgow.

Back in France this winter, Maxime Bernauer is set to discover Ligue 1 McDonald's en Vert. On loan to ASSE until the end of the season with an option to buy from Dinamo Zagreb, the Breton is the new number 13 in the ASSE locker room.

Maxime Bernauer:Very happy to be wearing this shirt! My image of ASSE is of a historic club, with exceptional supporters and a stadium with an incredible atmosphere. We've got to keep the club up, and that's the most important thing for the club. I want to integrate into the squad as quickly as possible.

Eirik Horneland, ASSE coach: Maxime is a very good ball player, very good at building, with a strong-willed personality. He's a good player who's coming into the group and who's going to bring us a lot of enthusiasm in the situation we're in.

Maxime Bernauer's “Vert l'Avenir” commitment

As part of its “Vert l'Avenir” CSR initiative, AS Saint-Étienne is offering each of its employees, including its players, the chance to make a commitment to one of the four themes of its ASSE Cœur-Vert association: citizenship, the environment, health and sport for all.

Maxime Bernauer has chosen to get involved in the Health theme.
