Maxime Bernauer: ‘Keeping positive intentions'
Ready to play his first minutes for Les Verts in Ligue 1, the St Etienne defender spoke to the press two days ahead of Saturday's match against Angers (7pm).
His arrival at ASSE
It wasn't easy to arrive at a club after taking that blow in Zagreb. It's frustrating because it's not ideal for integration and meeting expectations. The aim was to recover as quickly as possible without making things worse. I'm pleased to be back! It was good to play with the Reserve team, get back into the swing of things and get rid of any remaining apprehensions. I'm really looking forward to playing today!
His profile
I'm more of a relaunching defender. I like to anticipate and read the game. I'm not the strongest of defenders but I like to play with my head and get the ball. I think the coach's ideas match with my qualities. I'm mainly a central player but if I have to help out on the right, I'll do it. Playing in midfield, if I had to, would suit me a bit better.
The club's situation
It's not easy for a squad to go through a season like that. You tend to get into a negative spiral, especially at a club like this, which generates a lot of expectations. It's a difficult situation but we're still alive. The games ahead of us are crucial. There are things to work on, of course, but we also need to build on the good things that have been in place since the coach arrived. I arrived knowing that we were going to be playing for survival. As players, we need to keep our intentions positive.
